Finding Contentment Despite our Circumstances

"Peace I leave with you, my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid " (John 14:27, NIV ).

Since the beginning of 2020, we have experienced several major events that have disrupted our peace. We are enduring a pandemic. On top of that, we have learned about shootings, riots/protests, and social/racial injustice. As we have watched these events unfold, our own peace has been tested, our peace with others, and peace with the world have all been affected by these events. So, how do we hold onto our own peace when the world is trying to take it away?

Inner Peace- Despite what is happening around us, God promises to give us peace through our faith in Him. Romans 5:1 tells us, "Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ." When we establish a firm faith, our inner peace will be sustained through our commitment to God.

Peace with Others- These current events are a recipe for debate among our loved ones. I encourage you to value your relationships and hold onto them amidst a time of turmoil. Philippians 4:4-7 explains, "And the peace of God which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus." Focus on the word "guard." It's important to guard your own heart as well as the hearts of others. We are going through many trials these days. However, ask yourself how your relationships will look 6 months or a year from now? Protect your most sacred relationships despite what is going on at the moment.

Peace with the world- "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But, take heart! I have overcome the world" (John 16:33, NIV). Jesus has overcome the trials of this world, and because of that we can rejoice in his peace.

Jesus wants to exchange the weight of this world for his peace. I invite you to open your hands and feel that sense of peace.

What verses come to mind when you think of God's peace? What passages do you feel drawn to for encouragement during this time? Despite your circumstances, I pray that God will strengthen your inner peace, your peace with your family, and peace with the world.

One of my favorite Peace scriptures is in I Kings 19:11, 12 when Elijah was seeking a word from the Lord. God sent a strong wind, an earthquake, and a fire. But his voice was not in those. v. 12 ...and after the fire, a still small voice.” This always comforts me to know that God is a God of peace.
